Residents of Ward 7 are significantly impacted by traffic on Hwy 9, affecting their daily commutes and overall quality of life. The heavy traffic has raised concerns about safety, congestion, and air quality.

Amanda Chaffin will prioritize effective traffic management solutions on Hwy 9. Traffic calming measures such as improved signage, better lighting, and increased patrols could be part of a broader safety initiative. In cities like Portland and Seattle, road diets and reconfigured lanes have successfully reduced accidents in high-traffic zones. Additionally, the 12th Ave bike path needs reevaluation; a safer design could include clearer separation between bikers and vehicles, as well as physical barriers. Similar fixes in Denver, where dedicated bike lanes were added, have improved safety for all. While this may require redesign efforts, it is necessary.

Amanda Chaffin knows firsthand the vital need for accessibility in parks and recreational spaces, especially as a mother of a special needs son. Ensuring that everyone can enjoy these spaces includes installing ramps, improving parking, and making paths suitable for wheelchairs and mobility devices. Sensory features, such as smoother trails for individuals with visual impairments and sensory-friendly zones, are also important. While initial costs may be significant, state and federal grant programs can help offset expenses. With proper planning, ongoing maintenance can be effectively managed.

My constituents have expressed a strong desire for safer walking paths and parks/recreational green spaces. I am committed to developing policies that enhance the quality of life for our youth and promote a sense of safety and security for all residents of Norman. Together, we can create proactive solutions that encourage outdoor activity, celebrate our traditions, and support vibrant community events like music festivals and art walks. By fostering these initiatives, we can ensure that our community is a safe and welcoming place for everyone.
